"On the first day…my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree."
Pears, oh yes, my true love sure knew what to give me! Pears are one of the healthiest fruits that we can eat. Sadly overlooked in favor of apples and oranges - admittedly also very good for you - pears outshine its fellow fruits in several key ways. For one, pears are packed with fiber. A typical pear contains 6 grams of fiber – that’s almost 25% of our daily fiber requirement! Pears are loaded with B vitamins, vitamin C, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and boron. Pears, like all fruits and vegetables, also contain numerous polyphenols which are among the most powerful antioxidant, cancer-fighting, heart-healthy, anti-inflammatory edible compounds you can find. Pear skins are particularly concentrated in quercetin which is a potent polyphenol.
And, if that wasn’t enough, pears are essentially hypoallergenic and stimulate digestion throughout the entire digestive process. Pears help hydrate and bulk the stool which reduces both constipation and diarrhea.
You get all of this with only 100 calories per pear! Pears are one of the lowest calorie fruits, but sure do pack a punch. So, when your true love gives you a pear, consider it a precious gift indeed!
Happy Thriving!
